Micro & Semi-Micro Balances | Delmer Group
Delmer Group's microbalance range is intended for specialist low-mass weighing in laboratory research, analytical sample preparation and quality-control workflows where the selected instrument's capacity and performance meet the method requirements. The LD 2 and LD 5 models listed below offer 1 µg (0.001 mg) readability, with model-specific capacity, repeatability and linearity. Contact Delmer to confirm current configuration, availability and the correct balance for your application.

Delmer LD-Series microbalances
Microbalances are selected when a sample's mass is small enough that repeatability, environmental stability and handling technique become especially important. A displayed increment of 1 µg does not, by itself, guarantee 1 µg accuracy. Always assess repeatability, linearity, calibration uncertainty and minimum usable sample mass against the tolerance required by your procedure.
| Specification | LD 2 | LD 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum capacity | 2 g | 5 g |
| Readability | 1 µg (0.001 mg) | 1 µg (0.001 mg) |
| Repeatability (listed) | ±1 µg | ±2 µg |
| Linearity (listed) | ±3 µg | ±3 µg |
| Pan diameter (listed) | 15 mm | 15 mm |
Specifications above reflect the current Delmer product listings. Confirm the official datasheet and test conditions for the exact model before purchasing or writing a controlled procedure.
Applications for micro and semi-micro weighing
- Analytical laboratories: preparation and weighing of very small samples where the selected balance meets the method's measurement tolerance.
- Pharmaceutical research and quality control: low-mass weighing when the instrument is appropriately qualified and the procedure's requirements are met. A product listing alone does not establish USP, GMP or other regulatory compliance.
- Chemistry and materials research: small quantities of powders, reference materials and research samples.
- Filter and residue weighing: potential use for small mass changes, subject to suitable accessories, handling procedure and demonstrated balance performance.
- Specialist formulation: weighing small quantities of ingredients or standards when the balance's capacity and verified performance are appropriate.
Features to confirm on the selected configuration
- Automatic internal calibration or adjustment, as listed for the model.
- Backlit LCD display.
- RS-232C serial interface listed as standard; USB availability is listed as optional.
- Draft protection and handling features appropriate to the specific configuration.
Confirm included accessories, interfaces, calibration functions, power requirements, warranty and service options in the quotation. Do not assume that every feature is supplied on every variant.
How to select a microbalance
- Define the sample range: establish the typical and maximum net sample mass, including the container or weighing vessel where relevant.
- Set the required tolerance: choose a balance based on the method's allowable error and uncertainty, not readability alone.
- Assess repeatability and minimum weight: confirm that the balance can reliably measure the smallest sample used in the procedure.
- Plan the environment: use a rigid, level, low-vibration bench away from drafts, direct sunlight, rapid temperature changes and static sources.
- Establish calibration and checks: determine calibration, routine performance checks and records according to the risk and quality system for the application.
- Confirm data handling: verify serial/USB compatibility and the required software or data-capture workflow before ordering.
Good weighing practice
Allow the balance and sample to reach a stable temperature. Use clean, suitable vessels and consistent handling; minimise drafts and vibration; avoid touching samples or vessels in ways that introduce heat, moisture or contamination; and follow the balance manufacturer's operating instructions. For critical laboratory procedures, document the balance's calibration status and demonstrate that its performance is fit for the intended use.
Standards and compliance
OIML R 76 describes metrological and technical requirements for non-automatic weighing instruments subject to official metrological control. USP General Chapters <41> and <1251> discuss balance performance and weighing on analytical balances in relevant pharmaceutical contexts. These references provide general guidance; they do not mean that a specific Delmer balance is certified or automatically compliant. Verify the applicable requirements for your jurisdiction, intended use and quality system.

Frequently asked questions
What does 1 µg readability mean?
It means the display increments in steps of one microgram. It is not, on its own, a statement of accuracy, repeatability or measurement uncertainty.
Which is better for my work: LD 2 or LD 5?
The LD 2 has a listed 2 g capacity and the LD 5 a listed 5 g capacity; both list 1 µg readability. Compare the sample mass, repeatability, linearity and the method's tolerance before choosing.
Can these balances be used for pharmaceutical or GMP work?
Potentially, if the selected instrument and its performance are suitable for the procedure and the user completes the required qualification, calibration, documentation and quality-system activities. The product page does not certify regulatory compliance.
Can a microbalance be used for commercial precious-metal transactions?
Do not assume so. Commercial weighing may be subject to legal-metrology requirements, instrument verification and restrictions on approved use. Check the rules for the destination market and exact instrument.
What should I provide for a recommendation?
Send the typical and maximum sample mass, required tolerance, application, destination country, calibration or documentation needs, and required data interface. Contact Delmer Group for model selection and a quotation.
